How OFWs and the Filipino diaspora should appear in research

Published September 1, 2026Reviewed September 1, 2026

Citizenship and usual residence answer different questions

Citizenship may determine legal or political eligibility. Usual residence describes where a person lives most of the year and encounters everyday institutions, prices, services, media, and community conditions. A dual citizen living in Illinois and a Filipino citizen working temporarily in the Gulf may both belong in Global Filipino research while occupying very different analytical groups.

A study must state whether it concerns Philippine residents, eligible overseas voters, migrant workers, permanent emigrants, returnees, second-generation communities, or a broader cultural diaspora.

One diaspora number can hide several populations

Recruitment sources reach different parts of the diaspora. Employer networks, migrant associations, social platforms, consular lists, community organizations, and household referrals each have distinct coverage and selection patterns.

Demosight retains the recruitment source and does not blend resident and diaspora frames by default. Combined reporting is appropriate only when the research question, benchmark, and disclosure standard justify it.

What a defensible diaspora study should disclose

Readers should be able to see the countries or regions covered, eligibility rules, fieldwork languages, collection mode, recruitment channels, weighting benchmarks, sample sizes, exclusions, and the limits of the reachable population.

  • Ask citizenship and usual residence separately.
  • Keep Philippine-resident and overseas frames separate.
  • Report destination-country or regional coverage.
  • Never imply global coverage from a handful of online communities.
